4.2 Vapour Phase Design and Build Technology

CPL Carbon Link provide a systematic and structured approach to the design, manufacture and installation of vapour phase abatement equipment.

A wide range of different technologies can be implemented to suit the variety of differing requirements of the process to be treated. Expertise exists within the company in the areas of:

  • Carbon adsorption
  • Chemical and catalytic scrubbing
  • Catalytic and thermal oxidation
  • Cryogenics
  • Steam/vacuum desorption.

CPL Carbon Link work with a philosophy of the Total Solution Concept, where not only a comprehensive design service operates to provide systems which function correctly, but also to provide turnkey packages encompassing all the necessary equipment to achieve the abatement required.

These principles have been applied to a number of installations throughout the UK, Europe and worldwide.

A well-known manufacturer of synthetic veneers and laminates uses a highly flexible system to control emissions from a process air extraction system, whereby the activated carbon is contained within packaged adsorbers. These packaged units can be removed from site when spent and replaced with an identical unit. The removed unit is returned to the central reactivation station where it is serviced and made fit for return to the client as required. Turnaround on site has been achieved in less than 15 minutes allowing minimal process downtime, thus increasing productivity.

As part of the design phase of a project, full analytical support can be provided to ascertain the process conditions, including gas flow rates and contaminant concentrations in existing extraction systems. This service is undertaken within the company with modern, precise measuring equipment. This service extends through the life of the project to the commissioning phase using the same techniques to ensure the equipment serves the purpose intended.

A wide range of filter designs are available, including both deep bed technology (where premature breakthrough of the contaminant is an issue) and annular configuration (where high extraction volumes are present). Where space is at a premium for the abatement equipment, twin filter beds can be designed to combine the protection offered by deep bed filtration, with a high filter cross sectional area, typical of the annular style of filter
