3.7 Treatment of Contaminated Land
The process flow diagram illustrates a system designed for the treatment of contaminated land using water ring vacuum pump technology. A central feature of this equipment is the capability to extract ground air and ground water simultaneously, using a specially developed lance which has been carefully placed into the bore hole. The ground vapour and ground water which have been extracted by vacuum are transferred into a containerised package treatment plant. A cyclone is used to separate the stream into vapour and liquid phases. The vapour phase, which contains volatile organic compounds, is drawn through the water ring vacuum pump and subsequently treated in a CLEAN•FLO AT5 modular adsorption system containing Filtracarb FY5. Prior to adsorption, a conditioning stage is undertaken to reduce the relative humidity and to optimise the perfomance of the adsorption system. The liquid phase, which consists of a mixture of free phase product and a solution of dissolved organic compounds, is pumped to a separate treatment system that involves high efficiency phase separators, air stripping columns and adsorption ontoFilracarb CC65/1240 water phase treament adsorber.
The extraction and treatment equipment can be supplied by several expert companies in this field, with whom CPL Carbon Link have close cooperative links.
