2.3 Solvent Recovery/ Regenerable Air Filters
|
The photograph depicts a single annular adsorber regenerable filter system, complete with full plc control and steam plume abatement facility.
The system serves a process where solvent blends are transferred from containers to be reprocessed, for subsequent resale. The process air is extracted from localised points where the solvent is transferred from the shipping containers, collecting vapour at source and discharging it from the work environment.
The air is extracted from the work environment during normal day shift operation. The air is initially cleaned through mechanical filters to removed entrained particulate that would otherwise serve to foul the carbon bed. Following this step the air enters the annular filter where the activated carbon is retained between two perforated screens to form an annulus. The air enters the carbon bed through the outer screen, and permeates through the activated carbon bed where the organic contaminants are removed. The air then exits the media bed and is drawn upward through the centre of the filter chamber and then exhausted to atmosphere.

Following the operating shift, the steam is applied to the filter in a counterflow, in order to desorb the solvent and collect it as an aqueous material. This is achieved by cooling the exhausted steam from the filter, and storage for further processing to split the individual solvents.
It is normal following the application of steam to produce a short burst of highly solvent laden steam when the process air is re-applied or drying air added. The steam plume is collected in a standard adsorption filter to prevent the generation of a fugitive emission.
|
The use of this system is highly effective in the reclamation of otherwise lost solvent, and the technology therefore provides a tangible repayment on the capital outlay of the equipment.
Carbon Link provides a range of granular and extruded activated carbons to meet the requirements of the solvent recovery plant or regenerable filter operator. The key features of these products are;
- Range of activity levels for specific solvents at various concentrations
- Good desorption characteristics to minimise steam usage
- Specially washed products for sensitive solvents
- Excellent product hardness to resist mechanical attrition
- A wide range of particle sizes
- Spent material may be thermally reactivated
